A church built in 1857 stands in the middle of a lake. Nobody planned it that way. Its roof is gone. The walls are bare, only the tower still stands. Its icons were painted by a master of the Debar School. Then, in 1953, the water came. A lake for a power station filled the valley, and the church went under. The villagers moved. What could be saved was carried to a new church. This is Mavrovo Lake in North Macedonia. 13. 7 square kilometers of water built for electricity. Some years, only the spire shows above the surface. But when the water drops, in summer, you can walk right up to it. So is the church sunk or only waiting.
